You Know Your a Homeschool Mom When…
* When a child gets hurt—after seeing she’s okay—you round up some scotch tape to capture some blood and look at it under the microscope!
* You ask for a copier or laminator instead of jewelry for your wedding anniversary.
* Your kids think reading history is best accomplished while lying on the floor with their head resting on the side of their patient dog.
* You don’t mind if your students stand and wiggle while they do their math—because some of them actually think better that way.
* Your husband can walk in at the end of a long day and tell how the science experiment went just by looking at the house.
* You never have to drive your child’s forgotten lunch to school.
* The only debate about the school lunch program is whose turn it is to cook.
* You never have to face the dilemma of whether to take your child’s side or the teacher’s side in a dispute at school.
* If your child gets drugs at school, it’s probably Tylenol or Advil.
* Your neighbors think you are unbalanced.
* Your kids learn new vocabulary from their extensive collection of “Calvin & Hobbes” books.
* Your formal dining room now has a computer, copy machine, and book shelves, and there are educational posters and maps all over the walls.
* You have fruit flies or meal worms growing in a container— on purpose.
* Talking out loud to yourself is a parent/teacher conference.
* You have a teacher ‘in-service’ day because the principal needs clean underwear.
* You can’t make it through a movie without pointing out the historical inaccuracies.
* You step on math manipulative on your pre-dawn stumble to the bathroom.
* The teacher gets to kiss the principal and no one gossips.
* If your student claims that the dog ate his homework, your the one who finds the evidence.
* You can’t make it through the grocery produce department without asking your preschooler the name and color of every vegetable.
* You can’t put your produce in your cart without asking your older student to estimate it’s weight.
* You will not buy mustard without first having your student compare prices, figuring out which one has a better price per ounce.
* You live in a one-house schoolroom.
* Your favorite Christmas gift was a gift certificate to a book store.
* The principal can give the teacher a pat on the behind and it’s not sexual harassment.
* Your kids will readily talk to grown ups and are patient with kids half their age.
* You take the time to look at a tiny spider on a log.
* You must be careful when reaching into your purse, because there are likely rocks or dead butterflies in it.
* You have a line item in your budget for overdue book fines.
* You have to add the words: “homeschool, homeschooler, and homeschooling” to your computer’s spell checker so it will stop marking them as wrong.
* Your house in on the Parade of Homes List—for educational merchandisers.
* When visiting a strange town you see a parking lot full of mini-vans and station wagons and wonder if it’s a homeschooling conference.
* When you see children playing anywhere before 2:00, you wonder if they are homeschooled too.
* Your friends don’t want to help you move because you have so many books.
* Your children never ever leave the “why?” stage.
At Home Science
I love science. My kids love science. This family loves science too! And they know what they are doing!
Kris is a homeschool mom with 3 boys. She uses the Charlotte Mason approach.
This blog has step by step instructions for at home experiments. Kris uses wonderful photos to document her own boys doing the experiements.
Kris also reviews books for children on sciecne topics. This made me excited. I am always looking for books to get from the library that are worth while. If our family really likes the book, then we buy it.

Special Needs and Homeschooling
We have several children in our family that have always been homeschooled AND have special needs.
Homeschooling alone is not easy and requires sacrifice and commitment.
Homeschooling a special needs child can be very hard, but very rewarding.
Unless your child has a major disability such and being in a wheel chair, deafness or blindness, it is very hard when the child is young to get services. Schools fight you every step they can. I don’t know why and I am sure some where there are exceptions to this.
Weather your child has a major disability or something more subtle (although just as hard to live with) educating yourself about not only your child’s disabilty, but knowing your child’s personality, likes and dislikes can be a huge help in having the confidence in navagating daily like and seeking help.
Special needs children need the same education as other children, just a different approach and often times different teaching materials.
Difficulty often comes in finding and then paying for these materials.
Another difficulty is the parents fear that a school will some how do a better job. I can assure you that in may cases they do not. Just visit any disability message board for parents and you will read a daily stream of serious complaints written by parents about neglect and mistreatment and how the parent is helpless.
The parent can fight and fight, all the while nothing changes is the school. The parent spins their wheels complaining and following established protocol for IEP’s and 504’s. After about 7 months of meeting with every school official possible, the school gives in, grants 2 out of 7 requests by the child’s very concerned doctor, therapist, advocate, only to be moved to the next grade shortly there after and the NEW class room is unable for some reason to implement the NEW IEP you find out 3 months in to the school year and the fights start all over again.
Parents, please do not think the school can do better than you teaching at home.
